Used Baldwin Pianos: Models, History & What They're Worth
Baldwin was for most of the 20th century the great American piano house — the choice of Liberace, Dave Brubeck, and a thousand school music rooms. Golden-era Baldwins (roughly 1920s–1970s, built in Cincinnati) remain some of the best American pianos you can buy used, often at prices that undercut their quality dramatically.
The catch is that the Baldwin name changed hands and factories over the years, so era matters more with Baldwin than almost any brand. A 1960s Hamilton studio and a 2000s import wearing the same logo are very different instruments — date the piano first, then judge it.
What Baldwin is known for
- The classic 'American' sound: big, warm, and robust
- Acrosonic spinets/consoles — the best-selling small American pianos ever made
- Hamilton studio uprights that survived decades of school use (and keep going)
- Artist-grade L and SD concert grands from the golden era
Popular used Baldwinmodels & prices
Baldwin Acrosonic (36–40" spinet/console)
$500–$2,500 usedCharming, well-built small pianos for casual players and tight spaces. Cheap to buy; just accept the physical limits of a small piano.
Baldwin Hamilton (45" studio)
$1,000–$4,000 usedThe legendary school piano — built to take abuse and stay in tune. A privately-owned Hamilton is a fantastic budget teaching instrument.
Baldwin R / L grands (5'8"–6'3")
$7,000–$20,000 used/restoredGolden-era home and studio grands with a warm, generous tone. A rebuilt L competes with pianos at twice the price.
Baldwin SD-10 (9' concert grand)
$20,000–$60,000 restoredAmerica's concert grand of the mid-century stage. Rare, and prized by those who know them.
Ranges are typical asking prices for privately sold and dealer-restored instruments in the U.S.; condition, age, and restoration quality move prices substantially.

View detailsBuying a used Baldwin: what to check
- Date the piano by serial number first — pre-1980s Cincinnati-built Baldwins are the ones with the golden reputation
- Later Baldwins (post-2001 the brand moved under Gibson, with overseas production) can be decent but should be priced as such
- School-surplus Hamiltons can be great buys, but check the hammers and pins for wear from decades of use
- Acrosonics are lovely for what they are — just don't pay console-piano money expecting upright-piano sound
Frequently asked questions
Are old Baldwin pianos good?
Golden-era (1920s–1970s) Baldwins are among the best American pianos ever built. Condition still rules: a well-kept one is a gem, a neglected one is a project.
What is a Baldwin Acrosonic worth?
Typically $500–$2,500 depending on condition and cabinet. Their value is in charm and practicality, not investment.
