1989 Steinway & Sons D Grand ES (Pre-Owned)

The 1989 Steinway & Sons Model D is an 8’11¾” (274 cm) concert grand piano, widely regarded as the pinnacle of modern piano craftsmanship. Designed for maximum tonal richness and projection, it is the preferred choice for professional concert pianists, prestigious recital halls, and major recording studios. Weighing approximately 990 lbs, this late-1980s Model D features a Sitka or Bavarian spruce diaphragmatic soundboard, a 16- or 17-ply hard rock maple rim, and Steinway’s renowned Accelerated Action, enabling fast note repetition, precise control, and expressive touch. Its construction allows for a resonant, powerful bass, singing midrange, and brilliant treble, delivering a wide dynamic range and nuanced tonal palette that is ideal for complex repertoire. Pianos of this era were likely manufactured in New York or Hamburg, reflecting the highest standards of Steinway production, combining modern material science with time-honored handcrafting techniques. The 1989 Model D continues to be highly prized by concert performers, institutions, and collectors for its exceptional performance, enduring reliability, and iconic Steinway tone.
