Schimmel has built pianos in Braunschweig, Germany since 1885 and is the country's largest piano manufacturer. Its instruments have the clear, singing German tone of Bechstein and Blüthner at a lower price, and the company has been unusually innovative — the acrylic 'glass' grand and the twin-tone practice system both came from Schimmel.
Since Pearl River bought a majority stake in 2016 Schimmel has kept its German production for the Konzert and Classic lines while the Wilhelm Schimmel and Fridolin lines are built in Poland and China. On the used market, the German-built pianos are what carry the value.

View detailsBuying a used Schimmel: what to check
- Confirm where it was built: 'Schimmel' (Germany) vs. 'Wilhelm Schimmel' (Poland) vs. 'Fridolin' (China) — the price difference is large
- Older (1970s–1990s) Schimmels are German-built and often excellent value, but check for a tired action after 30+ years
- Renner actions are standard on German Schimmels — verify parts have not been swapped for cheaper substitutes during a repair
- Voicing on Schimmels runs bright by American tastes; ask a technician about softening the hammers if it is too much
