Schimmel has built pianos in Braunschweig, Germany since 1885 and is the country's largest piano manufacturer. Its instruments have the clear, singing German tone of Bechstein and Blüthner at a lower price, and the company has been unusually innovative — the acrylic 'glass' grand and the twin-tone practice system both came from Schimmel.
Since Pearl River bought a majority stake in 2016 Schimmel has kept its German production for the Konzert and Classic lines while the Wilhelm Schimmel and Fridolin lines are built in Poland and China. On the used market, the German-built pianos are what carry the value.
