W.W. Kimball began building pianos in Chicago in the 1880s and by the 1960s–70s was the largest piano manufacturer in the United States, turning out consoles and small grands from Jasper, Indiana in enormous numbers. Kimball also owned Bösendorfer from 1966 to 2002, which is why you sometimes see the two names together — though the Austrian grands were never built in Indiana.
Kimball stopped making pianos in 1996. Today the brand sits firmly in the budget tier of the used market: reliable family instruments, plentiful, and priced accordingly. A Kimball is often the first real piano a household owns and rarely the last.
