The Baldwin Model L is the American grand that filled studios, churches and homes for most of the twentieth century: a 6'3" piano with a big, warm tone and a heavier, sturdier build than the Japanese grands that later replaced it in the market.

Used Ls are plentiful and affordable relative to their size. The best examples have been rebuilt; original 1960s–1980s Ls with good maintenance are honest value.

What to know about the Baldwin Model L

U.S.-built Ls (pre-2001) are the ones with the reputation; later Baldwin grands were built overseas under the Gibson-owned brand and are different pianos.
The Accu-just hitch pins and full-perimeter plate are Baldwin trademarks of the era.
