The Steinway Model B is the piano Steinway itself calls "the perfect piano": a 6'10" grand that is large enough for a small hall and refined enough for a serious home studio. It has been in production for a century and a half and is the model most professionals aspire to own.

Used Bs are the most valuable Steinways short of the concert D, and the market is deep: rebuilt vintage Bs, art-case Bs, Hamburg Bs and near-new New York Bs all trade actively.

What to know about the Steinway Model B

The B has changed less over time than the M or A; a well-rebuilt 1920s B is close in character to a new one.
Hamburg Bs are prized and usually ask more than New York Bs of similar age.
Tiffany, Louis XV and other art-case Bs are collectible and priced on the case as much as the piano.
Rebuilt examples should come with a documented rebuild (soundboard, pinblock, action) from a known shop; a "restored" B without paperwork should be priced as unknown.
