Steinway Model L Piano: What It's Worth in 2026, Prices & Listings
- Size
- 5'10½" (179 cm) grand
- Made
- Built in New York from 1923 until 2005, when the redesigned Model O took its place
The Steinway Model L is the New York factory's 5'10" grand of the twentieth century: it replaced the original Model O in the early 1920s and was itself replaced by a reintroduced O in 2005. For eighty years it was the Steinway between the M and the A.
Used Ls span from Depression-era instruments to near-new 2000s pianos. Rebuilt vintage Ls are excellent; late-production Ls in original condition are among the best-value larger Steinways.

Live asking prices from 47 priced Steinway Model L listings on US Piano Connection right now, refreshed hourly. Dealer asking prices include prep work, warranty and delivery; a private sale realistically brings less than the dealer median for an ordinary example.
Like the M, an L's value depends on rebuild status more than year. Late-production examples in original condition can ask close to what a rebuilt vintage L does.

What to know about the Steinway Model L
- The L and the current O are the same size but different designs; a 1990s L is not an O.
- Vintage Ls (1920s–1940s) are prime rebuild candidates; the quality of the rebuild sets the price.
- Art-case Ls (Art Deco, walnut, Louis XV) exist and price separately from ebony.
- Confirm serial number, hammers, soundboard and pinblock condition with a technician on any pre-1980 example.

What is a Steinway Model L worth?
See the live snapshot above. Rebuilt vintage Ls and lightly used late-model Ls sit at the top; unrestored older examples are priced as projects.
Model L or Model O?
Same size; the O is the current design (reintroduced 2005) and the L is the twentieth-century one. Both are excellent; buy the better-condition piano.
