The Steinway Model L is the New York factory's 5'10" grand of the twentieth century: it replaced the original Model O in the early 1920s and was itself replaced by a reintroduced O in 2005. For eighty years it was the Steinway between the M and the A.
Used Ls span from Depression-era instruments to near-new 2000s pianos. Rebuilt vintage Ls are excellent; late-production Ls in original condition are among the best-value larger Steinways.

What to know about the Steinway Model L
- The L and the current O are the same size but different designs; a 1990s L is not an O.
- Vintage Ls (1920s–1940s) are prime rebuild candidates; the quality of the rebuild sets the price.
- Art-case Ls (Art Deco, walnut, Louis XV) exist and price separately from ebony.
- Confirm serial number, hammers, soundboard and pinblock condition with a technician on any pre-1980 example.
